Iran Spokesman Calls US-Israeli Attacks Flagrant Aggression Under UN Charter

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei responded on Friday to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's comments about the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, rejecting the characterization of the conflict as an 'unnecessary war.' In a post on his X account, Baghaei addressed Steinmeier, who had earlier criticized the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and the subsequent use of force against Iran.

Baghaei acknowledged that the current crisis stems from the US's unilateral and illegal withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He agreed that the imposed war should not have been ignited. However, he strongly objected to the term 'unnecessary war,' stating that the UN Charter does not recognize any concept of 'necessary war' that would authorize aggression against a sovereign state based on the whims of aggressors.

The spokesman emphasized that the American-Israeli attacks on Iran constitute a gross violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4, of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. He called these attacks a blatant act of military aggression against an independent state. Baghaei urged all nations that value the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter to unequivocally condemn this aggression and demand accountability for the aggressors.

Earlier on Friday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had taken a strong stance against the US and Israeli aggression, describing the conflict as a 'truly avoidable, unnecessary war.' He expressed regret over the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, stating that preserving the agreement could have prevented the current consequences. According to Mehr News, Baghaei's remarks underscore Iran's position that the attacks are not merely a policy disagreement but a clear violation of international law.
