Iran downs American MQ-9 drone in southern airspace

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced on Thursday that its naval forces shot down an American MQ-9 drone that had entered Iranian airspace. The interception occurred over Asaluyeh, a major energy hub located on the Persian Gulf coast in southern Iran.

According to the IRGC public relations office, the "aggressor drone" was detected and destroyed by a modern air defense system operated by the IRGC Navy, guided by Iran's integrated air defense network. The statement emphasized that the operation demonstrated Iran's authority and complete command of its air defense in safeguarding the country's air borders against any aggression or encroachment.

The downing of the MQ-9 drone marks the latest incident in a series of confrontations between Iranian forces and American unmanned aerial vehicles in the region. In June 2019, Iran shot down a US RQ-4A Global Hawk drone near the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran claimed had violated its airspace. The US military acknowledged the loss of the drone but denied it was in Iranian airspace.

The MQ-9 Reaper is a multi-mission unmanned aerial vehicle capable of carrying out surveillance and strike operations. It is operated by the US Air Force and has been used extensively in the Middle East and South Asia.

According to Mehr News, the IRGC statement did not provide details on the exact location or time of the incident, nor did it mention any debris or casualties. The report by Mehr News added that the successful interception once again highlighted the capabilities of Iran's domestic air defense systems.
