Six killed, suspect dead in Michigan shootings

Michigan State Police reported that officers responded just before noon to a shooting at a home in Missaukee County, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. At the scene, they found three people dead and another in critical condition. The wounded person was taken to a hospital. The suspect, identified as Chad Hickman, 39, fled before officers arrived.

As police conducted a large-scale search for Hickman, they discovered a fourth person dead at another home. In a post on the social platform X, police warned that Hickman was armed and dangerous and advised community members not to approach him, according to the New York Times.

Hickman's vehicle was later found in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake, which led authorities to his body as well as that of another dead person. Lt. Ashley Miller stated, "This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved." She added that investigators would work through the night to process each scene.

Police asked people to avoid the areas where the shootings took place. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the motive and circumstances behind the shootings. According to Mehr News, the incident is being treated as a mass shooting, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
