TEHRAN, Aug. 02 (MNA) – As the Arbaeen pilgrimage for 2026 gets underway, pilgrims are making their way to Karbala along Tariq al-Ulama (Route of the Scholars), also known as Tariq al-Furat. This historic route stretches approximately 89 kilometers from Kufa to Karbala, running beside the Euphrates River and passing through Najaf's palm groves.
The route holds deep historical significance for Shia Muslims, as it is believed to have been traversed by scholars and pilgrims for centuries. The name "Tariq al-Ulama" reflects its association with religious scholars who traveled this path, while "Tariq al-Furat" highlights its proximity to the Euphrates.
This year's Arbaeen walk, which commemorates the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala, has drawn large numbers of pilgrims from around the world. Many choose to walk the route as an act of devotion, following in the footsteps of historical figures.
